Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry is investigating reports that a Chinese company operating in the country is using Nvidia chips to train large language models.

The ministry said Wednesday it is working with relevant agencies to determine whether any domestic laws or regulations have been breached.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese engineers arrived in Malaysia in early March carrying hard drives, allegedly to build AI models in local data centres using Nvidia-powered servers.

The Biden administration has imposed restrictions on the export of advanced AI chips, placing Malaysia in a second tier of countries subject to limits on the number of chips it can receive.

Although the Trump administration later removed the curbs, U.S. authorities have issued guidance stating that companies must obtain a licence if they know AI chips will be used in the development of weapons of mass destruction.
