Google will invest an additional USD 9 billion in Oklahoma over the next two years to expand its artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure, the company announced Wednesday.

The investment includes the construction of a new data centre campus in Stillwater and an expansion of its existing facility in Pryor. The move aims to strengthen U.S. AI and cloud capabilities while supporting education and workforce development programmes.

The announcement comes amid intensifying competition among major technology firms, which are ramping up spending on data centres and skills development to meet surging demand for AI services.

Google said part of the USD 9 billion investment is included in its previously announced 2025 capital expenditure plan, with the remainder allocated for future projects.

Last month, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, increased its annual capital spending forecast to about USD 85 billion, up from USD 75 billion, and indicated further increases are likely next year.

Alphabet and other tech giants have defended their aggressive AI investments as necessary for growth and product improvement, especially in the face of competition from Chinese firms and investor concerns over slow returns.

In addition to infrastructure, Google last week pledged USD 1 billion to support AI education and training for U.S. higher education institutions and nonprofits. More than 100 universities have joined the initiative, including major public systems like Texas A&M and the University of North Carolina.

Other companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Amazon, have also launched AI education initiatives.

The U.S. government’s push for onshoring has further accelerated AI infrastructure investments by firms such as Nvidia and CoreWeave.

Apple recently announced plans to invest USD 600 billion in the U.S. over the next four years.
