Japan's government, which has previously subsidised TSMC for its capacity expansion in Kyushu, is now considering additional support for this new investment plan.

TSMC had initially planned a USD 12.2 billion investment for 6-12 nanometre chipmaking capacity at its second fabrication plant in Kyushu. Discussions with the Japanese government are underway to potentially modify this original plan.

In addition to TSMC, Japan is heavily subsidising homegrown foundry venture Rapidus. This company will focus on producing cutting-edge chips on the northern island of Hokkaido.

The Japanese government has determined that the chips produced by TSMC and Rapidus will serve different applications. Therefore, the government believes the two companies will not directly compete in the market.

Securing access to chips has become a priority for governments around the world. These components are essential for vital industries including electronics, automotive manufacturing, and defence systems.
