OpenAI had stated in January that it would begin showing ads to some U.S. users on its free tier and lower-priced Go plan. This initiative aims to generate revenue from the AI chatbot, funding the substantial costs of technology development.

Advertisements are distinct from ChatGPT’s generated answers and do not influence its outputs. User conversations are kept private and are not shared with marketers, the company stated.

Approximately 85% of users are eligible to view ads, though fewer than 20% are shown them daily. This indicates considerable potential for increased ad monetisation within the existing user base.

OpenAI has reported no impact on consumer trust metrics and low dismissal rates for ads. The company also notes ongoing improvements in ad relevance, learning from user feedback.

Plans include expanding the test globally to additional countries in the coming weeks. Australia, New Zealand, and Canada are among the regions slated for this expansion.

OpenAI has now broadened its advertiser base to over 600 organisations. Nearly 80% of small and medium-sized businesses have signalled interest in ChatGPT ads, according to the spokesperson.

Self-serve advertiser capabilities are set to launch in April. This development aims to broaden access and drive further growth for the ChatGPT maker.

Analysts suggest ads could unlock a significant revenue stream from millions of ChatGPT users. However, they also noted that the move could potentially displease some customers and harm trust in the product.
