Global PC Shipments Rise in Q2, Apple Leads the Way with Impressive Growth
Global PC shipments climbed by 3% in the second quarter, owing to strong demand for AI-enabled devices. Apple saw the most growth among PC manufacturers, with shipments increasing by 20.8% over the same period in 2023. Lenovo Group maintained its market leadership position, accounting for 22.7% of the market.
Apple was the standout performer among PC makers, with the greatest increase in shipments.
PC shipments totaled 64.9 million units in the three months ended in June, the second straight quarter of improvement following a two-year decrease. This positive growth is a welcome indication for the PC industry, which had seen a slowdown in orders following the pandemic-driven buying binge.
Apple's shipments increased by an astonishing 20.8% compared to the second quarter of 2023, propelling it to the top of the growth charts among worldwide PC manufacturers. Following closely behind was Acer Group, with a gain of 13.7% in shipments.
Ryan Reith, the group vice president at IDC's Worldwide Device Trackers, attributed the growth to two key factors: the market hype surrounding AI-capable PCs and a commercial refresh cycle. He stated, "The buzz is clearly around AI, but a lot is happening with non-AI PC purchasing to make this mature market show signs of positivity."
However, the PC market in China continued to face challenges, resulting in weaker results overall. Excluding China, worldwide shipments grew by more than 5% in the quarter compared year-over-year.
Lenovo Group, based in China, maintained its position as the market leader with a market share of 22.7%. HP followed closely behind with a market share of 21.1%. Dell Technologies, on the other hand, held a market share of 15.5%, but experienced a slight decline in shipments of 2.4%.
