MWC Shanghai, the regional edition of the world's largest mobile communications industry trade exhibition, focused on artificial intelligence (AI). China's telecoms network operators and equipment manufacturers are leveraging AI developments to propel their businesses forward.
Senior executives from China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, Huawei Technologies, and ZTE Corp unveiled their AI initiatives at the start of MWC Shanghai. Chairman Yang Jie has highlighted the event's primary themes as AI applications, rising technology, and future industries.
In the face of slowing global user growth, the telecoms industry is adopting AI efforts as part of a broader trend to modernise its companies. In his keynote address, China Unicom chairman Chen Zhongyue emphasised the need for telecoms network operators to adapt to the changing landscape.
Chen stated, "The traditional business based on network communications is becoming saturated, and the growth in user numbers is slowing down." He cited data showing that mobile broadband user growth for major telecom operators globally had dropped to 2.3% at the end of last year, down from 34.3% in 2014.
To underscore the industry's focus on AI, an AI processor from Nvidia was showcased at the opening of the MWC Shanghai trade show on June 26, 2024.
